Вспомогательный глагол/Auxiliary verb 
Вспомогательным глаголом для Past Continuous является глагол to be в прошедшей форме: to be
was для   I, he, she, it
were для   you we, they

(+) Утвердительная/Affirmative 
Subject + be (Past Form) + verb + ing Ex.: We were playing football in the garden when it started to rain.

(-) Отрицательная/Negative
Subject + be (Past Form) + not + verb + ing They were not (weren’t) playing football when it started to rain. — Они не играли в футбол, когда начался дождь.

(?) Вопросительная/Interrogative(общий вопрос)
be (Past Form) + subject + verb+ing Were they playing football when it started to rain? — Они играли в футбол, когда начался дождь? Yes, they were. — Да. No, they weren’t. — Нет.

while — в то время как when — когда as — когда, в то время как all morning/ day/ evening/ week etc. — все утро/ день/ вечер/ всю неделю и т.д.
