In 1587 Shakespeare went to work in London, where he began to act and to write plays and soon became an important member of a well-known acting company. Most of his plays were performed in the new Globe Theatre built on the bank on the River Thames.

Shakespeare wrote more than 37 plays, 154 sonnets, two long poems and a great number of other poems. The main genres of Shakespeare’s works were tragedies and comedies. His most famous works include such plays as “Romeo and Juliet”, “Hamlet”, “King Lear”, “Othello”, and many others.

This is the Holy Trinity Church where Shakespeare was buried. He died on his birthday, 23 April, 1616.
